Fall 2008
The Wizard of Oz
Hingham and South Shore music-lovers who've been on the stage—or who have wanted to—have a chance to try out on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 11 and 12, for a part in one of America's most beloved musicals. All you have to do is follow the yellow brick road.
The Hingham Civic Music Theatre's production of "The Wizard of Oz," based on the Academy Award-winning motion picture with music by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, is a special joy on the stage. And the most fun of all may for the performers in their fantastical costumes.
Auditions start at 7 p.m. in the Sanborn Auditorium of Hingham Town Hall . Call-backs are on Wednesday, Aug. 13. The singing is simple: just be prepared to sing 16 bars of a song that fits your voice—any song, not necessarily from "The Wizard of Oz"—and bring along the sheet music. Piano accompaniment will be provided.
Never auditioned? It's lots of fun, and the HCMT organization is adept at making all contestants feel at home. Those auditioning must be at least 8 years old as of July 1, and are advised to dress comfortably.
The show will be performed on two weekends, Oct. 17-19 and Oct. 24-26, under the direction of Tom Davis, a veteran director from the Whitman-Hanson area who has previous directed a range of productions from "Annie" to "Little Shop of Horrors." Music director is Plymouth 's Sandee Foley, who previously was music director of HCMT's "Anything Goes," and who recently sang and danced in "Gypsy" and "Nunsense." Choreography is by Bridgewater 's Janet Fortier.
Save the date. Come on out, and give Oz a try at Sanborn Auditorium.
